The connection between Ibrahim (Peace be on him) & the Seerah of our Prophet

الحمد لله رب العالمين والصلوة والسلام على نبينا محمد وعلى اله واصحابه اجمعين

If one goes through the books of Seerah (Biography) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him), it can be noticed that most of them start with a mention of Ibrahim(peace be on him), suggesting a strong connection between these two great prophets of Allah. Here are two points which advocate the mention of Ibrahim(peace be on him), while mentioning the Seerah (Biography) of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him).

  1. The noble lineage of our prophet can be traced back to Ismail (peace be on him), who was the son of Ibrahim (peace be on him). So in a way, Ibrahim(peace be on him) is the grandfather of our beloved Prophet. The Quran proclaims this relation in Surah Al-Hajj (22:78):

The meaning of which can be translated as: “And strive hard In Allah's cause as you ought to strive (with sincerity and with all your efforts that His name should be superior). He has chosen you (to convey his message of Islamic Monotheism to mankind by inviting them to his religion, Islam), and has not laid upon you in religion any hardship, it is the religion of your father Ibrahim (Abraham) (Islamic Monotheism)…”

  2. The birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) was the indication that Allah had accepted the supplication of Ibrahim and his son Ismail (peace be on them both), that they made to Allah while raising the foundations of the House of Allah in Makkah. Their supplication is mentioned by Allah in the Glorious Quran (2:129):

The meaning of which can be translated as: "Our Lord! Send amongst them a Messenger of their own who shall recite unto them Your verses and instruct them in the book (this Qur'an) and Al-Hikmah (full knowledge of the Islamic laws and jurisprudence or wisdom or Prophethood, etc.), and sanctify them. Verily! You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise."

Before the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him), Arabs were deeply immersed in all types of evils starting from polytheism to female infanticide to warfare. They were very weak in their faith and beliefs. They used to abandon their idols that they worshiped, the moment they saw an idol more beautiful than the ones they had. Even during such an era, there were several men, who were upon the right creed of at-Tawheed (Monotheism), those that hated idol worship and were upon the human nature. They are known as Al-Hunafaa. The famous ones amongst them were Qus ibn Saidah Al-‘Iyadi, Zaid ibn Amr ibn Nufayl (the father of Saeed ibn Zaeed, one of the ten who were promised Jannah in a single hadeeth), Labeed ibn Rabee’ah, Amr ibn Anbasa to name a few. Some of them passed away before Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) attained Prophethood, while others were granted a lifespan so long that they could hear the call from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) and responded to his call in the affirmative. The Hunafaa were completely on the path of Tawheed (Monotheism) and they despised shirk in any of its form. They called people towards the worship of Allah alone, some using poetry, some using beautiful admonition and some using the fear of Akhirah (Hereafter). Hence from the above mentioned facts, two points are to be noted:

  • That the proof had been established upon those Arabs who died upon kufr (Disbelief) and shirk (Associating partners with Allah), before the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him), since there had been amongst them those that lived upon Tawheed and called towards it.

  • That even during times of shirk(Associating partners with Allah)and kufr(Disbelief), there existed Al-Hunafaa who were upright upon Fitrah (Innate nature). Even today, when Islam is known and practiced in every corner of the world, there are amongst the disbelievers, many, who are upon their faith just because they saw their parents practicing that specific religion. They are displeased with idol worship anddo it out of compulsion and they abstain from it, when given a chance. It is our duty to identify those Hunafaa and call them towards Islaam.

Some of the following characteristics were granted to our Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him):

  1. Arabs used to accept as their leaders only those who had a noble lineage. Hence, Allah decreed that Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) should come from a very noble family,

“Verily Allah chose Kinānah from the children of Ishmael, and He chose Quraysh from the children of Kinānah and He chose the children of Hāshim from Quraysh and He chose me from the children of Hashim.” (Muslim)

  2. He was strong physically and was beautiful in appearance.

  3. We all know that Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) was raised as an orphan. His father Abdullah passed away before he was born and his mother died when he was very young. It is important to know the lessons we learn from Prophet Muhammad´s (peace be on him) life as an orphan. Allah took it upon Himself to nurture and guide the Prophet from his birth as He did not want the parents of the Prophet (peace be on him) to raise him. This is because of the influence the parents have in raising a child, which is well known from the hadith, of a child becoming a Christian, or a Jew or a Magian because of the influence of the parents.

If Allah makes anyone orphan it is not an injustice to them because if it was an injustice, Allah would not have decreed such a thing for Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him), His most beloved servant. We can see a vast difference in the child who grows up as an orphan and a child who grows up under the care of the parents. A child raised under the care of the parents grows up with love and affection from his parents. Parents feed, wash, bathe, cloth them etc. In contrast, the orphan child becomes more independent since they are on their own. So the orphan child grows up into a more independent, self-confident and a courageous person. We can see all these characteristics exhibited in the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) who grew up as an orphan. Prophet Muhammad´s (peace be on him) life also gives us a message that orphans can become very successful in their lives. We can see many instances of orphans being successful. History shows that several orphans went on to become scholars in the science of Hadith and Tafseer and many were martyrs.
