What is the importance of Tazkiyah for a Daee?
الحمد لله رب العالمين والصلوة والسلام على نبينا محمد وعلى اله واصحابه اجمعين
It should be known that Tazkiyah (Purification of the soul) plays a vital role for all Muslims, as Allah has made it a condition for eternal success which is the entry into Jannah (Paradise).
Allah says in the Glorious Quran (87:14), (the meaning of which can be translated as):
Indeed whosoever purifies himself shall achieve success.
Allah says in the Glorious Quran (91:9-10), (the meaning of which can be translated as):
Indeed He succeeds who purifies himself . And indeed He fails who corrupts himself.
- This indicates that Tazkiyah is more important for a Daee, since a Daee acts as a representative of Islam, and anything wrong in his conduct will only add insult and bring about humiliation to the name of Islam among the people who are being called to it.
If one were to notice the initial chapters that were revealed after Muhammad (Peace and Blessings be on him) was granted Prophethood, the following verses fall in these chapters. Allah says in the Glorious Quran (73:1-8), (the meaning of which can be translated as):
O You wrapped In garments (i.e. Prophet Muhammad Sal-Allahu 'alayhe Wa Sallam)! Stand (to pray) All night, except a little. Half of it, or a little less than that, or a little more; and recite the Qur'ân (aloud) In a slow, (pleasant tone and) style. Verily, we shall send down to You a weighty word (i.e. obligations, legal laws, etc.). Verily, the rising by night (for Tahajjud prayer) is very hard and Most potent and good for governing (the soul), and Most suitable for (understanding) the word (of Allâh). Verily, there is for You by Day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties, and Remember the Name of Your Lord and devote yourself to Him with a complete devotion.
There are three things that Allah has commanded the prophet (and all believers in general), that help in purification of the soul.
- Night Prayers (Qiyaam Al-Layl) : This command came down around a decade before the obligation of the 5-daily prayers (which constitute our collective relationship with Allah) and serve as a means of individual contact and relationship with our Lord.
- Recitation of the Quran (At-Tarteel) : The Qur’aan being the words of Allah, grant the Daee both guidance in his affairs as well as leave an effect on the person himself, that makes him a better Muslim and a mentally strong person, equipped with lots of patience, which is mandatory for doing Dawah.
- Dhikr (Remembrance of Allah) : The remembrance of Allah is something that has multifold effects on the Muslim. On one hand, it keeps his tongue busy with its purpose of creation (i.e. Worship of Allah), not allowing it to transgress the limits set by Allah, on the other hand, empowering the Daee with Allah’s protection and help, which are the most important things that any Muslim is in need of.
Therefore, as a Daee, one must try to stick to the above three as much as possible in order to be amongst the successful ones.
